]]>I’ve been told a few times over the years to “get a life”. I suppose they meant something mean, but who cares. I decided to get one anyways! And in doing so, I decided to create my very own DIY 1up Mushroom Plush. If you’re looking to get a life yourself, feel free to download the pattern follow the video instructions and make your very own!
I made mine in green and white, but there’s no reason why you couldn’t create an army of these cute little guys in pretty much any colors you can think of (or find the fabric for). I’d recommend staying away from green and purple though, those poisonous little buggers are a bad time.

]]>Well it’s been more than awhile since I’ve made a nerdy craft for y’all, so I suppose it’s time I fixed that. My latest video is up, and in it I show you how to convert an AiKiou Stimulo cat food dispenser into something a bit more Marioesque; A warp pipe cat feeder. I originally saw this dispenser over at NerdECrafters place, and thought it looks a LOT like the warp pipes from Super Mario Bros. So when I found one of the feeders at my local vets I decided I should really come up with a way to finish the job.
You’ll need the cat treat dispenser, the pattern which needs to be printed on sticker paper, and some 3/16″ foam core. That’s about it.
It’s Super (Mario) easy to put together, and it will make food time with the cats a whole lot more adorable. If they can figure out how to get it out that is. You might need to send in a plumber.

]]>Who you gonna call? Well if you’re looking for some cool looking mashed up geek art, then you should think about giving artist Mikeatron a ring. He has a way of mixing up geeky themes that not only looks great, but are amusing at the same time. His art includes things like a piranha plant from Super Mario mixed with Nyan cat PacMan ghosts mixed with Ghostbusters and Beebop and Rocksteady as Calvin and Hobbes.
Be sure to checkout Mikeatron’s full portfolio for a huge dose of nerdy goodness.
In need of a splash of color with your Geek Art, Agents of Geek has you covered. We Tumbld upon the art of Mikeatron recently and fell in love with his combination of explosive colors and dark humor. While searching his blog we uncovered some amazing geek art from Star Wars, Ghostbusters, The Legend of Zelda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

]]>The cake aims to be a level-accurate depiction of levels 2.1 and 2.2. I chose those levels as it allowed me the variety to depict three different ‘places’ on tiers that could be joined relative to one another. I picked level 2 as I originally thought I could fit the whole level on the cake, but as I began I realised even these beginning levels were too long.
The cake took about 5 days to finish. There was a lot more detail than I expected. Everything from the stripes on the pipes to the embossing of the stones took a lot of time. Everything is hand cut, mostly with a craft knife, and either embossed or painted (with edible ink) to add the details. It’s all fondant or marzipan, save for the coral and the waves, which are piped from royal icing.
The pressure point on this one was how small everything necessarily became. The enemies are all less than a centimetre tall. The teeth on the goombas and piranha plants are less than a mm long. I’ve never worked on such a minute scale before. It was definitely a challenge, but has given me lots of confidence in attacking this sort of thing in future. Usually I’d omit teeny details because they were ‘too small to be done’. Now I know it’s possible with a steady hand, patience, and a hellovalot of time.

This art is nothing to sneeze at. Ok, I’m sorry, but I had to. I truly believe you can make art out of pretty much anything, and bashirsultani would probably agree. You can watch as they take a bunch of salt and with it create a mini nintendo salt art masterpiece.
People really can make art out of anything these days. Proof positive: Bashir Sultani’s “Art with Salt,” a self-conceived art medium that the artist uses to draw portraits of famous people. And recently, he decided to use salt to create portraits of two very famous fictional characters: Nintendo‘s Link and Mario.
Check out these time-lapse videos of Bashir Sultani’s salt art interpretations of Link and Mario. The Mario one is in color, but I think the Link one is by far the better piece.

]]>It sounds like it’s even for a good cause. Go Calgary!
As many have already noted, the display is built to support our local foodbank through the ‘Canstruction’ event; many cities throughout the world have their own ‘chapters’ and at the conclusion (Calgary structures will be up until March 21st) all food items are donated. I believe Calgary is going on their 8th year of participation and the cumulative total of donated food is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Each participating team is comprised of or sponsored by local companies.
The structure is made from nearly 11,000 small snack sized tuna cans and close to 200 pieces of individually cut and scalloped 1/4″ hardboard between each of the layers.
The model was developed from scratch in AutoCAD using only the artist’s eye, this allowed each of the layers to be plotted (to scale) and overlaid on top of the hardboard for accurate positioning / cutting.
The wall was developed in Excel by importing cropped pictures of all the different cans and their varied rotations and then shrunk to fit their respective ‘2×1’ pixel.
And the red can in the corner is the power light of the 3DS.

]]>Bullet Bill is a character that has appeared as an enemy in almost all of the Super Mario games from the very beginning. There are a few varieties, and their look and behavior has changed over the years. Like me, I’m sure you’ve been killed by a Bullet Bill many times.
I enjoy making crazy, non-traditional model rockets. I built regular ones as a kid, and I still find it extremely rewarding to test out new building methods and trying to push what I can do with simple, inexpensive materials.
I thought it would be neat to build a life-size Bullet Bill model rocket, as it provided all sorts of great challenges. I ended up building two versions, both of which I thought were beautiful in many ways, and they taught me a lot of new tricks.
Version 1 is covered briefly in steps 1 – 3. I began this first attempt with most of the planning focused on how to create a lightweight, visually accurate model of Bullet Bill. I didn’t think much about its flight-worthiness until it was complete. At that point, I knew it surely wouldn’t fly well, but thought, “Well, lets just go shoot this off and see what happens.”
It didn’t end pretty. The video is in step 3.
For version 2, which the photos show here, I applied the building techniques I learned with version 1, but paid closer attention to giving it a shot at actually flying. It was scaled down a bit, and built (somewhat) more like a real model rocket. The video of the launch of version 2 is in step 15.
Take a look at the steps involved and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
